From 1st of July 2007 virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England will become smokefree. And I’m pleased. Well pleased. That doesn’t make me a fascist, although many smokers would have you believe I, and anyone who supports this legislation are. For years I have sat in pubs breathing in other people’s smoke. For years I havent had the choice. Yes, I could have sat somewhere else, or gone somewhere else - but why should I? Surely I have a right to clean air. Surely that’s everyone’s right. For years non-smokers have put up with smokers breathing out their addiction in our faces, and for years non-smokers have just accepted it. This law is long overdue and I can’t wait. I just hope its enforced sensibly and smokers do the right thing. You never know, cut down smoking, cut down the weight on the NHS from people who make the choice to damage their bodies.
